Emergency Assistance Program
St. Thomas/Holy Spirit maintains a food pantry near the church office which has been designated as an emergency assistance program. Frequently people come during the week and are assisted by the church secretary for items such as food, toiletries, diapers, etc. This ministry is supported by congregational members’ donations. Gift cards to Aldi are purchased with this cash and are available on an as-needed basis. Information is also provided so that people can locate regular community-based food pantries, such as Feed My People. Thanks to Lea and Jerry Wischmeier, who faithfully keep the pantry stocked. Gifts to the Emergency Assistance Program are always welcome.
Hunger Relief Ministries
Feed My People
STHS has been highly involved with the ministry of Feed My People for several years. Weekly, we collect food items for these food pantries in our community. Throughout the year, special food drives, as well as monetary collections, focus on this important outreach. Volunteers from the church volunteer to help at Feed My People. We consider them a vital ministry partner in the community.
Three Ways to Share with Others
1. Food for our Hungry Neighbors — Use the list below and fill a bag with healthy food items and return to church. Food will be donated to Feed My People, which has been experiencing very low supplies of donated food and a tremendous increase in need.
Canned chicken or turkey
Canned salmon or tuna
Canned or dried beans
Turkey or vegetarian chili
Low-sodium broth or bean soups
Plain or low-sugar oatmeal
Whole grain crackers
low-salt canned vegetables
low-salt canned tomato products
canned fruit in light syrup
no sugar added applesauce
2. Give money to ELCA World Hunger Appeal — Use a designated envelope. ELCA World Hunger provides relief, development education and advocay that address the root causes of hunger and poverty. Your gifts to ELCA World Hunger help our church creatively and courageously work toward a world of justice in which all are fed.
3. Advocate — Urge members of Congress to protect safety-net programs that feed hungry children. Visit www.bread.org for more information on Bread for the World’s efforts to bring the cause of hunger to our legislators. A personal letter really does make a difference.
